I take out a frozen marinated chicken that I had bought a few days ago on sale. Leaving it out to thaw, I sit across from Damien. “Let me start. I think somebody broke into my apartment today.”

Damien, who had been lazing on the sofa, watching me with a half smile, freezes. His smile vanishes. “What?”

I’m perched on the table, facing him, and my lips press together in a thin line. “My front door was open when I came home and the window was open as well. My things have been moved around too.” I fold my quivering hands over each other, trying to hide them. “I check everything twice before leaving.” I take a deep breath. “I don’t want to sound like I’m jumping to conclusions but I think your brother had something to do with it.”

Damien doesn’t say anything for a few seconds and I wait. Finally, he sits up. “Walk me through your conversation with Jeremiah again. Word for word.”

I deliberately leave out the part about the debt but I repeat the rest of the conversation, not leaving anything out. At the end of it, Damien’s face is blank, as if he’s processing. He’s silent and I watch him, waiting.

What he says however, surprises me. “Jeremiah and I are half-brothers. He’s younger than me by two years. Out of the two of us, I stand to inherit the family business.” His voice is calm as he continues. “His mother, our father’s first wife, now ex-, strongly disapproves of this arrangement.”

I frown. “I don’t understand. You’re the oldest son, so how is she his first—?”

Damien’s lips are twisted into a wry smile “My mother’s from France. She and my father met during his semester abroad. Before he left, he promised to come back and marry her. They were in love or so he says. My mother was pregnant when he left but she didn’t know it at the time.”

I feel a sliver of apprehension as he continues. “My grandmother wanted Susan Edecker, Jeremiah’s mother, to marry into the family. She and Susan’s mother were friends so obviously learning about my father’s lover didn’t please my grandmother and she refused to let the marriage take place. The Edecker family is a force of its own and while it doesn’t compare to the Knight family, they’re joining would have been very favorable for both families. And Susan was in love with my father as well.”

This is beginning to sound like some soap opera drama and I’m sitting at the edge of my seat, listening.

“My grandmother couldn’t force my father to marry Susan so the two of them instead flew to France in the hopes of buying out my mother.” Damien has an exasperated look on his face. “For how intelligent and successful my mother is in her field, she can be naïve as fuck, a hopeless romantic you can call it. My mother was already visibly pregnant at the time and my grandmother was furious, Susan even more so. But my mother refused to give in to their demands and it wasn’t as if she was lacking in money.
